Two casual workers were killed and two others injured on Monday after a heap of sand they were excavating collapsed at a construction site in Gigiri, Nairobi.

The four were were excavating a mountain of sand from a building that has been under construction near the Village Market when the sand collapsed on them, killing two of them on the spot.

“Two of the workers died as a bulldozer tried to remove the sand from where they had been trapped. The others who had multiple injuries were saved and rushed to hospital,” said Nairobi Area deputy police boss Moses Ombati.

Police had to fire in the air to save the construction site manager after angry colleagues of those who had been trapped descended on him blaming him for the deaths.

we can say this was as mare case of ignorance. The workers said they had warned the manager that it was dangerous for them to dig the sand manually while a bulldozer was also digging at a nearby site but he allegedly forced them to continue with the work.

Kenyans still proud of Obama, but with an eye on their own elections

Kenyans still proud of Obama, but with an eye on their own elections:

...The musician Makadem is still following Barack Obama, but he's focused on getting Kenyans ready for their own election. In Barack Obama's first election, the eyes of Kenya, where his father was born, were watching closely. But this year, as the novelty has worn off and Kenyans face their own upcoming election, attention has shifted especially as people focus on getting young people interested in voting. Many in Kenya claimed the candidate as one of their own because Barack Obama's father was Kenyan. Nairobi singer Makadem scored a hit with this song titled “Obama Be Thy Name.”Four years later, Makadem says Kenyans are still on Obama’s side. But Kenyans have their own upcoming elections to think about, and Makadem admits that’s what he’s concentrating on.“I’m always a positive person and I’m quite optimistic that it will end up well, but the way it looks, it looks bad,” Mak said. “At the end of the day things always seem to work out. So that’s what gives me the optimism that we’ll have a new president and Kenya will come out on top.” One campaign issue close to Makadem’s heart is getting young people to vote. He says there’s a lot of work to be done on that front.
