Two casual workers were killed and two others injured on Monday after a heap of sand they were excavating collapsed at a construction site in Gigiri, Nairobi.

The four were were excavating a mountain of sand from a building that has been under construction near the Village Market when the sand collapsed on them, killing two of them on the spot.

“Two of the workers died as a bulldozer tried to remove the sand from where they had been trapped. The others who had multiple injuries were saved and rushed to hospital,” said Nairobi Area deputy police boss Moses Ombati.

Police had to fire in the air to save the construction site manager after angry colleagues of those who had been trapped descended on him blaming him for the deaths.

we can say this was as mare case of ignorance. The workers said they had warned the manager that it was dangerous for them to dig the sand manually while a bulldozer was also digging at a nearby site but he allegedly forced them to continue with the work.

According to Ombati, police are investigating the circumstances under which the 2:30 pm incident happened.

“Action will be taken if there is any form of negligence on the side of management of the site,” he said.

construction managers should be aware of all the dangers that might occur in a construction site. Every manager is required to have undergone a site safety and security training to be able to handle work at construction site.
